C is for Ciao, An Italy Alphabet/ #PPBF

Hi Friends!

Another week has flown by. And now we are eating chocolate ice cream trying to stay cool in hot spring weather. Recently I made my lunch from an ice cream sundae with nuts and hot fudge and whipped cream. *Yum!* 🙂 Now I find myself looking at other picture books than during the winter. More travel oriented. I would love to vacation in Italy and the picture book I chose for today was filled with fun facts about It that made me wish I had one planned for Italy.

C is for Ciao an Itally Alphabet book coverTitle: C is for Ciao, An Italy Alphabet

Author/ Illustrator: Elissa D. Godwin and Mario M. Cuomo/ Marco Ventura

Publishing info: Sleeping Bear Press / 2009 / nonfiction

Summary provided by publisher : “Each letter of the alphabet represents a topic related to Italy. Topics include: Aqueducts, Da Vinci, Florence, Montessori, the Sistine Chapel, and zabaglione. A poem introduces each letter topic and expository sidebar text provides details.”

Themes : Nonfiction, country, Italy, alphabet, Europe,

Resources: Sleeping Bear Press has their own information on this book making it the perfect resource. There is a search bar where one can look up further facts or information on Italy.

And if one is looking for the perfect teachers guide look no further than this.

Also alternately a discussion leader can ask what the students already know about Italy and expand the others knowledge about it by just talking about it Pull out a map and show where it is in relation to other countries and discuss climate and possible exports and imports. Ask about what one knows about olive oil.

Why I Love it: This is not just an alphabet book. It is a geography, history, and famous person biographies book. Yes, the alphabet is the emphasis as it describes Italy in broad detail but the sidebar gives the finer details with the fun facts. It makes the book especially interesting to a broader age range. There is also a foreword or introduction by Mario M. Cuomo. Did you know he has written nine books including other picture books? I am going to be looking these up.

I think you’ll love this book as much as I did and it just brings us to summer. It might be the subject having to do with warmer climate but it definitely made me ready for vacation.

  2. When my oldest was in 4th grade we decided to “travel around the world” through books. This would have been perfect! What a way to visit a country. And a clever concept. I agree with Joanna; I wish I had thought of it!

      Hi Sue!

We are not alone!! What a wonderful idea for your family to travel to other countries in books. How thoughtful to do that with your children. 🙂

      Thanks, ManjuBeth!

I liked the cover, too. The whole book was rich with imagery and the illustrations were numerous as there were those for the sidebars and those for the text. sometimes there were images superimposed on each other. 🙂

I love it when books teach children about other parts of the world. What a great concept. I too wish I had thought of it. Has the author written other books similar featuring other countries I wonder.

Good thinking! I’ll check and see if the author does have more like this. And someone said about Sleeping Bear Press doing more books like this too. I’ll be searching for sure. 🙂

  9. What fun! I went to a high school that was predominantly Italian, but my friends didn’t teach me too many Italian words. I think I’d enjoy this as much as any child. 🙂

      Hi Teresa!

I think you are right. You would enjoy this one. The side bars are so full of information it can be a travel book making one ready for a trip there. There were not too many italian words though. Mostly information of culture, cooking, traditions, famous people etc, history etc. Jam packed full of info. 🙂

      • I will definitely look for this, Clar! I was in Italy once in 1986 and probably won’t go back, but I’d love to learn more about their culture…especially the cooking. 🙂
