Question: Do You Like Reading or Writing Better?

writing memoirHi Friends!

Welcome back! I am glad to see you after the summer from hell which I had. You are a sight for sore eyes. But first, before I explain that,

I came across a post recently here,

“Adventures in Children’s Publishing” asks what do I like more. Reading or writing?

Like the author of that post I have found it hard to answer. And after thinking about it I found it harder to like reading as much since I became a writer because of analyzing what I read. While reading I ask things like “does it grab me”? Are the characters realistic with flaws? Do they seem real? Or like talking heads? What about the dialogue?

And the author of the post asks; if I like the book, why? If I don’t like the book, why? It takes me a long time to lose myself in a book because of that.

But writing? I lose myself easily. I especially lose myself in the rough first draft. I start a picture book or piece of memoir and POW! I am gone. Lost in my writing.

I wrote the above last June thinking I’d have a head start writing the first post of fall after blog break. I thought that would do it. How ever, I Feel compelled to share some of my summer with you. Some of you know I’ve been writing my memoir. We had a death in the family first thing in June and have been dealing with repercussions all summer. Even this Friday spending all day in a foreign county courthouse dealing with probate. And I mean ALL day. From seven AM when we woke up to finally coming home at four thirty exhausted and burned out. Then running to the bank first thing Saturday morning and standing in a line ten patrons long. So now you know why you are sight for sore eyes. It is wonderful to write for you.

I must confess I haven’t done much writing this summer.

But I eagerly turn away from this hell summer and turn towards fall. Look towards September for writing more. I promised my sister I would not even take classes. I told her I would take the break I sorely needed and didn’t get this summer. That promise didn’t take long though, to break. I’m taking Katie Davis’s course Crank it UP starting in Sept 17. Here is what she said:

And in honor of trying to keep a short first post, I’ll stop it here. Except of course my gifts for my friends.

Here you go. This is why I keep journaling, too.It is on how you can find truth through journaling.

Ssooo…?

What about you? Do like reading or writing better? Why? Was this a hard question to answer or easy?

See you on Friday! I’ll have a brand new PPBF to tell you about.

XXXOOO

Kisses and hugs!

  1. Enjoyed your post about reading and writing. I find myself analyzing too. But, I do love to read. Sorry to hear about the loss in your family. I went through that in the spring. Sounds like you are leaping into fall with a lot of enthusiasm. Hope Edmund Pickle Chin is doing well. By the way, your link to 100 reasons brings up a different page.

      Hi Patricia,

I do have a lot of hopes for autumn. I think things will definitely change now for the better. (As it could’t get much worse.)

I See what you mean about that link. I took it down. It must have gotten lost in cyber space. 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. 🙂

  3. Welcome back and I hope your book is doing well. Right at the moment, I’m liking reading more than writing. (sigh) I couldn’t get the link to work for the four houses accepting children’s manuscripts.

      Hi Rosi,

Oh no, another link not working! I’ll check and take it down. Perhaps like the other it got lost in cyber space. 🙂

My book still isn’t in print. Trouble at the publsher I guess. The winners of the blog tour still don’t have their books. I”m totally embarrassed. 😦

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate hearing what you have to say. 🙂

Glad to have you back. So sorry to hear your summer was not what you planned but these things happen. I must admit I enjoy reading and writing equally as well. I feel cheated if I don’t get to read and write during the day. I learn so much from reading other people’s work. (sometimes I learn what not to do of course) and I feel motivated to write after reading.

      Hi Darlene!

Thanks for visiting. 🙂 Like you, I also feel more motivated to write after reading. Even stopping in the middle sometimes to write a thought down. And now often reading with highlighters and pencil to jot notes in the margins. Kindle makes this easy, too, by letting me highlight and then commenting.

I hope all this is making me a better writer. 🙂

Please send me a copy of your new book. I would love to read it and do a review for you. (Not meaning of course that I will be judgemental about it) Do you have my address? If it is easier I can buy one from amazon but I love having it autographed. 🙂

Welcome back and I am so sorry that the summer was hard and not a true break. Here’s to a great fall!

Reading (and movie watching) has certainly changed drastically for me since I began writing, and I have become more critical. With such a huge TBR pile, I no longer plough through to an end of a book if it is really not grabbing me after fifty pages or so. That said, I still find tremendous pleasure in reading, as I do in my writing.

Thanks so much for your welcome back, Joanna! 🙂

I know exactly what you mean by the TBR pile. Even for my bookclub if a book doesn’t grab me, I Don’t waste time reading it. Sometimes it may even hurt someones feelings. But the pile is too big and my time too precious. I’m not sure what to do about not hurting someones feelings. 😦

Thanks for sharing, and sorry to hear you had a tough summer.

To answer your question, I like both reading and writing–I believe there can’t be one without the other. I love finding a good book to get lost in. I love when I read a book and am able to say “I could NOT have written that!” Of course I love writing, too 🙂

      Hi Val, Welcome!

I am reading the Goldfinch now and feel like I could NOT have written that it is THAT good.

I Loved reading your book, The Scarred Letter and learned a lot from it. I Loved that book as well and was sorry it was over after I reached the end. Am going to read your other books now. 🙂

Good question. Seems so easy on the surface, but for me, it’s not a simple answer. My preference for reading vs. writing depends on my mood. Sometimes, I want nothing better than to lose myself in the world an author has created. I like books where I get so involved in the story, I abandon the need to analyze. Other times, I like creating stories of my own.

      Hi Janna!

So true! I am reading “The Goldfinch” by Donna Pratt and it sooo sooo good. I wish I could write like her. I felt shell shocked at first when she described the bomb is so well done. no analyzing here. Just living the story.

You are so good at writing your own stories and I loose myself in your stories as well. Maybe I should go back and analyze some of them? Have you taken any classes in writing to get so good?

Thanks for coming by and visiting! It is so good to see you. This is what I missed over the summer. 🙂

Thanks for your nice comment, Clar! I don’t know that I have anything for analyzing, but I guess you could try 🙂 I’ve taken two creative writing classes (one when I was nineteen, and the second nearly twenty years later.) Most of my writing is actually ‘insurance’ stuff for work, so fiction is a nice release.

    Welcome back mate!
I really LOVE reading to the classes I Skype with. All those rapt faces waiting to hear what happens next. . . 🙂 When I am writing a new book the writing consumes me. I do not read then. When I do read, I know it is a great story when I don’t stop to mentally comment on poor plots, dumb dialogue, and characters that seem made of cardboard. A marvelous story, well written, will sweep me away into its world. When that happens reading is a JOY unsurpassed.
