So now for the reason for this blog post. A Perfect Picture Book Friday Selection.

IS there really a human race book cover_Title: Is There Really a Human Race?

Author/ Illustrator: Jamie Lee Curtis/ Laura Cornell

Publishing info: Joanna Cotler books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishing, 2006, fiction

Themes: Stories in Rhyme, Conduct of life, normal childhood experiences, humor

Resources:

Teacher guides, activities. Summary from Jacket: While thinking about life as a race, a child wonders whether it is most important to finish first or to have fun along the way.

First Three Sentences: IS there really a human race? Is it going on now all over the place? When did it start? Who said, “Ready, Set, Go”?

Why I love it: This book is a book with rhyming and rhythmic questions from the beginning to end. A poem of questions. The questions come from a small boy who has lovable red hair and a marathon number which might be the census number, so right away you know what kind of race he’s asking questions about. The questions lead finally to answers so human and full of love that the reader is stunned into reading it again at a slower clip, and, looking more carefully at the fantastic illustrations. My favorite illustration is the Arab and Jew playing ‘go fish’ on a picnic bench. A small vignette.

Do you think you will like this book?

Jamie Lee Curtis is the well know actress – right? Unlike some from her field, she has been hailed as doing a wonderful job. This PB looks like another winner, and I have pinned it to my Book Reviews (Kids to YA) on Pinterest. The cover art is a delight. Hope your Book Tour is sailing along in fine style Clar. Will pop over there today and take a peek. 🙂

I Just love your name, Penny! I think it is so cute and clever and adorable. Maybe as an author now, you don’t think so but it is great!

I hope your library has it too. 🙂

      • That’s sweet of you to say you like my name. When I was deciding whether to use three names or two for my publishing name, I just could resist the sound of the two p’s in Penny Parker and the two k’s in Parker and Klostermann.

Yes!! I didn’t see the rhythm but it’s definately there. Great going! I just have three names which can be very confusing to others. they think I am three different people! And my old friends, who knew me as Clarike, want to know what I go by now. I like Clar but it’s another confusion point with them. I really don’t know how to handle it any better than I am. 🙂

I’ll have to go back and look for your review of ‘There’ sounds so good and related to mine with the deep questions! Thanks for bringing my attention to it.

I hope to see you on tour with us. Some of the posts are absolutely fab even if I do say so myself. Susan did a great job on Edmund’s interview and Joanna’s and Susanna’s posts. I am so proud of her. 🙂

Thanks so much, Darlene! I did not see it’s importance as I was writing it. It took Susan to see the futher and the deeper meanings of it. I am so proud of her. She really saw the symbolism and the importance of the book that I did not see. I need to have a long talk with her. 🙂
