My Writing Processes Blog Tour

Hi Friends!

Recently, the lovely Joanna Marple ,tagged me to join this fun Blog Tour on writing processes. Each week, authors post answers to four Writing Process questions, then tag three friends to play along the following week. You can read Joanna’s fabulous post, and learn what she’s working on, right here . You can also see a shout out on Joanna’s  book “Snow Games” and Joanna’s face book  page right   here.

About Joanna:

After graduating college, Joanna took her guitar and a rucksack of books and t-shirts (to barter for more books) and roved the continents, getting involved with some wonderful people, projects and stories. She never knows where the next adventure will take her. Now she writes to give children the same wings to escape into adventure that she still uses. She is currently living in her eighth nation and on her third continent, in New York City, where she is studying for an MFA in Creative Writing and Literature. She writes picture books and YA, often with characters from different cultures! Her first book, SNOW GAMES, was published in 2012 on the eBook Platform, uTales – http://utales.com/books/snow-games-3.

Following are my responses, and at the bottom you’ll find the three wonderful people who’ll post next week!

What am I working on:

I am now writing a memoir which is a ten-year slice of the hardest time in my life. It covers when I lost my late husband, my life as a single mom raising teens and my brain disorder.

I am also working on two picture books that fell from my brain in stream of consciousness because they say something about my life. One of these is going to a SCBWI workshop with Magination Press in May. So there’s a time limit and time pressure on this.

And on the back burner I have started a nonfiction picture biography picture book.  I am also brain storming something for literary journals.

Also! Last but not least! My second picture book, EDMUND PICKLE CHIN,  A DONKEY RESCUE STORY  is due for release in April and somehow I must plan for a book launch.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Since I work in multi-genres; being published in three anthologies, one a collection of flash fiction, one a slice of memoir and one has two children’s stories in it –plus being published as a picture book author, it is just natural for me to now do memoir.

This is the way I work. Across genres.

The way Edmund Pickle Chin is different is that it is a true story about an abused donkey who learns to trust his caregiver and be a help on the farm. For “Annie’s Special Day” it is different because of it being a basic concept book teaching time in a fun way.

Why do I write what I do?

I just love writing.  I write every day since it is my second career. Ever since I got the contract for “Annie’s Special Day” I have wanted to make my private journals public material. And the way to make my private writing public is to write my memoir. I am fulfilling a dream.

And as far as my picture books? I write them because I think it is increasingly important that kids love reading and if they are surprised by learning something while doing something they love? All the better. I also think picture books help kids make sense of their world.

How does my writing process work?

For my picture books I write a rough draft with a ton of versions and when I think they are ready, I bring them to my critique groups for feedback. In fact for “Edmund Pickle Chin, a Donkey Rescue Story” I wrote my acknowledgement thanking my critique groups because they had been so invaluable in what they gave the story.

I wake up each morning excited about my writing and first thing before breakfast I write for a couple of hours. Early in the morning is my best time. Then I can do my life after wards. Run errands; go for a workout or my Pilates class or whatever.  Some lucky days it’s reading all afternoon.

      Thanks, Joanna!

I’m excited about my writing projects, too, And SCARED! What if I fall behind? What if no one cares about what I write? My unpopular inner critic is busy at work today!!

      Now to silence him. 🙂

  2. I love your writing projects and that you’re not afraid to tackle other genres. Like your reasons for writing and that you wake up early eager to write. I look forward to reading your memoir. Didn’t quite understand what you meant about a MS going to a SCBWI workshop with Magination Press in May. I review a lot of their books. Good luck.

HI Patricia! I made a mistake about that Manuscript. At the time I wrote that, I thought Magination Press was going to be going over manuscripts at the SCBWI workshop I want to go to because one of my ms would be “perfect” for them. I was putting undue pressure on myself trying to perfect this Manuscript for them to look at. But after reading the flyer more carefully it is just a get to know them get together. I am still excited in going but the pressure is much less now.

      Thanks so much!.

      • Jill Niemark publishes under Magination Press. Since they are related to the American Pscyhological Assoc., they have a lot of requirements. Jill is a member of 12×12 and other groups. You might chat with her, especially if you have a good idea. But, you get a sense of what they want at the meet and greet.

I developed this idea last year and now since I”m focused on Memoir I did not up my membership to 12×12 this year. It is a big thing to stop my memoir for the SCBWI workshop with Magination and further develop it now. And it is so unfortunate that I don’t belong to 12×12 so I could chat with her.

I did run it by the 12×12 critique group we had though and also my own SCBWI crit group I ran in my town. We are having a reunion in two weeks and they will look at it again for me.

          Thanks so much, my friend.
I saw some good books on the holocaust in NY review book review with Whispering Neighbors picture book rating high. I think I will most likely see that on your blog soon. 🙂

          • I would imagine you eat, sleep and drink your MS. It’s always with you because it’s a big part of your life. But, I think you’ll have fun with Magination Press. Your MS may be a match and you’ll learn their process. They like realism.

Wish I had your courage. Don’t know how to begin. I have a story to share, but just can’t motivate myself to touch it. It all gets mumbled in my brain. Even tried to outline it.

Is the holocaust book called Whispering Neighbors?

              Thank you, Patricia!

The book is actually called “Whispering Town.” by Jennifer Elvgren. Have you taken Susanna’s Magic Picture book class? it is great for sharing on how to begin fleshing out an idea. It happens on a daily basis.

              Keep me posted ok?
I want to take class again because it was so helpful. Then take it to critique groups and get feedback. Good luck! and have a great day! 🙂

  3. Oh Clar, good wishes to you on the memoir. So very hard to write. I read somewhere that memoir is showing not telling too. I want to write one with Christopher. Love your writing process. It made me smile.

      Thanks, Robyn!!

I love it when I make people smile. 🙂

I think for you to write one because of Christopher would be terrific.

I am writing one because the death of my late husband triggered a brain disorder and I want people to realize that life is not over when you have been diagnosed with one. 🙂

  4. Thanks so much for the tag, Clar. 🙂 I loved reading about how and what you are doing! You are like a locomotive that has gathered steam and is chugging full steam ahead. It’s lots of hard work…but connecting with special people and making new friends are rewards in themselves. I’m so happy to have connected with you…and look forward to holding your published memoir one day. 🙂

      Thanks so very much, Vivian!

This locomotive stopped today and took a break. Stopping at noon and watching a movie and taking it easy while getting used to a new computer since Windows XP is stopping support for internet users starting tomorrow.

It will be several years before my memoir is finished much less published but for sure, I”d love to have you be a beta reader if you could? 🙂

Lets think about it, OK? 🙂

Right now I have so much going on I’m a little overwhelmed. I Just came back from a school visit and though my inclination is to relax, I feel I should write. In fact I already wrote in my journal giving me time to process it. How do you process busy times? 🙂
