How Do You Stay Motivated?

Hi Friends!!

How do you stay motivated?

After reading about MG author Darlene Foster last week, are you ready for another memoir post? What? You didn’t read last week’s post? Well, this is your lucky day because here is your second chance.

I just read a blog post on how to stay motivated in homeschooling and I thought these same tips could apply to me in staying motivated to write my memoir. Sometimes I wake up at four thirty AM and get a lot done early but usually the rest of the day is duds. Not much more is accomplished after breakfast. Then there are those days where I have Pilates and run errands afterwards usually ending in a very late lunch out and getting home at four PM. Who wants to start a project at four PM? Not me, not anyone. Unless of course your like my memoir partner. 🙂

However my memoir partner says her favorite writing time is evening. So who am I to judge? As long as it gets done. I just know I don’t get much done after lunch. Either at home or out. I usually read or answer emails or do face book after lunch. Another deterrent to writing is our walks. Yes, this snowy winter has seen fewer walks but sometimes I go down in the basement with a light jacket and walk on my personal treadmill while reading. Not as good as swinging my arms while walking briskly outside but a little better than sitting in my chair. I hope anyway. Any movement is better than no movement I say. And that applies to writing.

Do you write goals? Short or long? I find sometimes writing my word count next to pieces I’ve written lets me see how I’m meeting my goals. I must do about 10,000 words a month to make my goal  of 60,000 by the end of June when this class, www.wymi6m.com , ends, and hopefully enough to pull me through to the end of an 80,000 word or so memoir.  So far in my outline, I have fourteen chapters with about five to six parts to each one. So I just break down the monthly goals to make weekly ones. About 2500 words a week. Not hard for me. I think the hard part will be breaking it down. Cutting parts and words. Killing my darlings.

What tips could you give, to keep yourself motivated in exercise or writing? Do you make weekly or long term goals? And how do you stay motivated in any project?

And for my writer friends I have two gifts: A writer’s conference in Pennsylvania and Memoirist and writer’s coach Marion Roach’s advice for finding time to write.

For those of you who want to go to a wonderful writer’s conference in Pennsylvania??  The famous Pennwriters conference and who’s writers group I belong to? May 15 thru May 18 th 2014:  Sign up here: :

Do you have trouble finding time to write? Here’s what Memoirist and writing coach Marion Roach     has to say :

Stay tuned for next Tuesday when we’ll have a questions and answers from my Memoir partner. Its’ good so don’t miss it.

Kisses and hugs!

  1. Writing is such a funny thing. When it’s going well, it’s impossible to stop, and there’s no need to worry about motivation at all. When it’s not going well, you need every trick in the motivational book to get yourself to write anything! It’s so easy to get distracted with tasks that feel useful and productive… but are not actually your writing (which should always be your top priority.) Sometimes daily goals like 2 pages or 500 words are helpful, and sometimes they make you feel like a failure because you can’t manage them. It’s a tricky business! I find a nice walk with the dogs, even if it’s cold and snowy, is very motivational 🙂

      Thanks Susanna,
You just seem like Mother to me. Mother Earth. The things that a long walk won’t cure. When do you find time to walk the dogs? Or write? Or sleep?

No I am not making fun of you, Quite the opposite. Your online presence seems like it is 24/7 without breaks. Really when do you find time to write much less walk the dogs? 🙂

Clar, I don’t think it matters when you write, as long as you DO write on a regular basis. I have written for many years (since I was a child – w-a-a-a-y back when), and the older I became, the more determined I was to put all my ideas into stories that kids would love to read. When you get to a certain age, the ticking of time grows louder every year, and nothing motivates a writer more than that. I have stories to tell, and ideas to flesh out into fun and intriguing tales. No clock is going to out-tick me!!

Yet it was when my eldest daughter offered (if necessary) to posthumously publish any “left overs” after I departed, . . Well, suffice it to say that this was a humongous motivator! With 13 books published, I decided if I could not win readers by charm and great writing, I would try SHOCK THERAPY – hence my new “Promo Ho” Campaign: see more of that here: http://hookkidsonreading.blogspot.com/

The number of books now available for kids (and adult) readers is HUGE ( many of them pretty terrible, thanks to self publishing beginners), so the buying public is often hard pressed to know what books are good, bad, or absolutely right and wonderful for their child. Be determined that YOUR book will be a first choice!

So my best advice, dear Clar, is set a writing goal, and let nothing stand (sit or run) in your way. She who is ruled by determination will succeed. Your memoir is fermenting in the barrel of your brain, just waiting to be clarified, purified, and launched into a world of eager readers. WOW! How’s that for a huge shove in the right direction? Good luck, mate. And may the procrastination bug go bite some other writer!!

Thanks, Margot! for all your good advice. And for getting this post on pinterest. I wonder do you ever use my pinterest tool in sharing that I have along with facebook, twitter and the rest on the bottom of my post? I tried it last week and it brought me to some never never land. I think that world is inhabited by someone named Clarbojahn. Next time I’m on Pinterest I’ll look her up and see if I can connect with her. 🙂

YES Clar, I have used your Facebook one ( today in fact for my timeline share) but not the Pinterest one. What you need is the Pinterest button on the TOP of your Browser, so you can use it on any page you pull up from the internet.

You went to your own page because that’s what the button you have does. A PIN IT button on your Browser bar will PIN any page you are on to YOUR Pinterest board – whichever one you choose.

          Thanks, Margot,

I have tried reading all your input about this on your own pinterest site but don’t know how to put a pinterst button on the top of my browser. Can you re email me about this? Maybe you did in the past and I was too thick to realize what you were explaining to me. 🙂

My old senile mind is not working as keenly as it once did. I am sorry.

Just remember that some sites may not let you pin. I am not sure whether it is these sites that stop you pinning, or if it is Pinterest. Facebook and Google+ are two such sites. And the pages you pin must have pictures on them. I often come across a great article I would love to pin , but there are no pictures – so. . . no PIN!!

I’m the wrong person to give advice on writing goals! I was getting a lot done on my novel before Christmas so I made the mistake of writing down some word count goals and milestones. I fell off the wagon in January and have been writing short stories ever since. I think my hesitation with the bigger projects is that it takes so much for me to get back into the story, and I don’t see immediate results. With a short story, I get an idea, write and have something finished in a couple hours. Looks like I need to change my mindset or I’ll never get anything done 🙂

Good luck on your project! If you write best in the morning, then I’d definitely stick with that… no use trying the evening only to find out the desire to write is long gone.

      Thanks, Janna!

Yes, a long term project is hard to keep motivation for because the sense of accomplishment takes so much longer to obtain. Like you say it only takes a few hours to develop an idea for a short story and months for that novel. But if you ever do write that novel, Janna? I am sure you have a built in readership because your success in short story writing.

Have you ever thought of submitting to literary journals? If you got published there then you would be looked at so much more seriously when it came time to submit your novel. Plus your short stories would get a wider audience from doing so. Email me for pdf on it. My email is Cbowmanjahn at yahoo dot com. I would love to hear from you.

In January, I started submitting 1 to 2 contents/journals/magazines a month. So far, crickets! In reading past ‘winners’ and publications, I’m not really sure that I have “literary” in me. I don’t like much of what I’ve read, so I don’t think I can write that style. Still giving it a go, though, in case I might be pleasantly surprised. I started following a site that gathers submission opportunities for short stories and poetry, so I review it weekly. If something ever does come of these submissions, I’ll definitely write a post about that 🙂

I have an article you might be interested in listing all the places journal hang out. Have you tried Duotrope or Duotrobe something like that, that keeps track of all the journals and who’s taking submissions or not?
