The Contest: Here it is, straight from the horse’s mouth. Susanna Leonard Hill that is. “Write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (title not included in the 100 words), using the words spooky, black cat, and cackle. Your story can be scary, funny or anything in between, poetry or prose, but it will only count for the contest if it includes those 3 words (you can count black cat as one word) and is 100 words (you can go under, but not over!) Get it? Halloweensie – because it’s not very long and it’s for little people :)”
That is how Susanna Leonard Hill starts off this contest. And I have a winner at 99 words. Here is my entry.
Olivia the Pig or Rather Not?
“Have You or Your Kids Ever Dressed Up Like Book Characters For Halloween?” This question on the library window made Sara plead with her mom to let her dress up like Olivia.— Sara’s favorite character since, ever. Mom made an Olivia Pig costume with striped pants and pointed hat. BUT, Sara doesn’t want to be a pig!
“I didn’t think Olivia was a Pig.”
“Princess Leia from Star Wars?”
“That would be taken already”
Then Sara took the character of “One Witch” to try on.
“Can I have a Black Cat and Cackle? I want to be spooky, too.”
The End

Two quick fixes needed: (1) Sara or Sarah, but not both; (2) probably “striped pants” not stripped pants (unless Olivia is a stripper).

What do you want to be for Halloween? A question that so many children find it hard to answer…and once they decide, they often change their minds – after mom buys or makes the costume. This story is so true!!! Great job, Clar.

That’s funny… my son is just like that. Yesterday he changed his mind about his costume, which to him is following his daydreams and to me is another expensive trip to the Halloween store. Once he got mad at me 6 months later because I got him a puppy costume, which he loved, because I couldn’t figure out how to make a robin costume, his first choice. *sigh* I think the title should be Fickle Cackle!
