The Contest: Here it is, straight from the horse’s mouth. Susanna Leonard Hill that is. “Write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (title not included in the 100 words), using the words spooky, black cat, and cackle. Your story can be scary, funny or anything in between, poetry or prose, but it will only count for the contest if it includes those 3 words (you can count black cat as one word) and is 100 words (you can go under, but not over!) Get it? Halloweensie – because it’s not very long and it’s for little people :)”
That is how Susanna Leonard Hill starts off this contest. And I have a winner at 99 words. Here is my entry.
Olivia the Pig or Rather Not?
“Have You or Your Kids Ever Dressed Up Like Book Characters For Halloween?” This question on the library window made Sara plead with her mom to let her dress up like Olivia.— Sara’s favorite character since, ever. Mom made an Olivia Pig costume with striped pants and pointed hat. BUT, Sara doesn’t want to be a pig!
“I didn’t think Olivia was a Pig.”
“Princess Leia from Star Wars?”
“That would be taken already”
Then Sara took the character of “One Witch” to try on.
“Can I have a Black Cat and Cackle? I want to be spooky, too.”
The End
Oh, Ok. Don’t like the title. A no no? Make up one for me will you? And leave it in the comments? Thanks so much!
You probably already know that this means no PPBF this Friday, right? But look for other cuter short stories of Halloween at Susanna Leonard Hill’s blog and enjoy. And I have a great one for the following Friday and also a good post for this coming Tuesday. To give you a hint it will include a giveaway and have to do with my stats. So vote for me on Susanna’s blog and come back to see me on Tuesday and the following Friday. After that I will be traveling to Texas to see my sister to do one talk on November 11th at the Rockwall Retired Teachers Association and two talks at the Rockwall Library on November 13th. I’m looking forward to those. On my return home I’ll be autographing books at the Carver Senior Center on November 15 and 16, If you’re nearby, come see me ok?

Haha ~ that’s funny. I wonder if she knows that Mickey the Mouse is a mouse?
Two quick fixes needed: (1) Sara or Sarah, but not both; (2) probably “striped pants” not stripped pants (unless Olivia is a stripper).

OOps thanks! Will fix right off. 🙂

What a fun story, Clarike! I like the character and the voice. I could see this expanded further into a picture book. Great job!

What do you want to be for Halloween? A question that so many children find it hard to answer…and once they decide, they often change their minds – after mom buys or makes the costume. This story is so true!!! Great job, Clar.
Have fun on your trip!

That’s funny… my son is just like that. Yesterday he changed his mind about his costume, which to him is following his daydreams and to me is another expensive trip to the Halloween store. Once he got mad at me 6 months later because I got him a puppy costume, which he loved, because I couldn’t figure out how to make a robin costume, his first choice. *sigh* I think the title should be Fickle Cackle!

Yes, yes, yes. I’ve been trying to think of a good costume to get this November (you know, when they are on clearance.) Mine are all “vintage” at this point, and not really in a good way. But I had not considered a book-inspired costume. Now, I just need to think…and read…

Olivia is being a little bit pig-headed about her costume. (I know, another bad pig pun.) Choosing a good costume is a big responsibility for kids!
