Perfect Picture Book Friday/ Please Bury Me in the Library
Title: Please Bury Me in the Library
Author/Illustrator://J.Patrick Lewis/ Kyle M. Stone
Published by: Hartcourt books. 2005, fiction, Poems
Age appropriate for: eight through eleven./ grades three through five.
Resources: There were no best teacher guides or resources that I could find but one idea I had was discussing the idea with kids of how one gets ”buried” in a good book in the library.
Themes: Humor, Poetry, Libraries, books
What the Jacket says: There’s nothing like curling up with a good book, but you have to be careful. The perfect phrase can pull you in, and before you know it a minute turns into an hour, and hour turns into a day, and a day may turn into…eternity.
With a tip of the hat to Edward Lear, X.J. Kennedy, and Lewis Carroll, renowned poet J. Patrick Lewis whips up a concoction that is both ghoulish and giddy. New comer Kyle M. Stone provides warm, funny illustrations that make this the perfect treat for any book lover.
Climb into a comfy chair with this kid-friendly homage to reading—and bring plenty of provisions.
First Three Sentences: What if books Had Different Names?
What if books had different names?
Like Alice in…Underland?
Furious George,
Goodnight Noon,
Babar the Beaver, and
A Visit From Saint Tickle Us, or
Winnie-the –Pooh Pooh Poohs,
Why I loved it: It is a little different from the usual picture books I get. And totally different from any picture book I have read up till now. It is a hilarious poem book making fun of all the classics and twisting them into funny themes and plots. As you can see from the title list above it is a spoof on classics. A Parody. It had me smiling and laughing. A third grader would get the most out of this I think having been introduced to the usual poems and books by then. And any adult with even a high school reading level would end up laughing hysterically like I did.

🙂 Thanks, Jarm, I really wondered if it was pertinent and where to put them. Seems like the reason for the post should come first. Glad you like them.

Great to see picture books for older readers! I often miss books like these that aren’t shelved with the picture storybooks (at least at my library!)

Do you have a place in your library for juvenile picture books that you don’t know about? check it out ok? Because there are two places for picture books in mine. One for the younger set and one for the older. 🙂

Thanks. I may have to have this title put in my will. It sounds like a great book. Since you liked it, you MUST read Face Bugs, also by J. Patrick Lewis. Of course, you may find all the buggy-ness just as creepy as the rather macabre rhymes in Please Bury Me.

Yes! I would like to read it in a big comfy chair with a reading buddy by my side. The Mom Person sometimes says that when I die she will freeze dry me and put me on a shelf in the library.

Ha! good imagery for the Ma person. I would like to have a version of you as well. However I don’t need it to curl up in my chair and read. You will love this book, however. you read it. 🙂

Bury Me in the Library sure has some neat twists on the usual PB for kids. I do hope the title doesn’t make some parents nervous. Added to my Book Reviews (kids to YA) on Pinterest.
