MY BLOGAVERSARY. Why I Started Blogging and Why I Keep On.

Why I keep blogging.

In the process of getting my children’s book ‘Annie’s Special Day” published I have shared whatever I was learning with you. My latest was going to be the workshop from www.TheMuseonlinewritersconference.com called Marketing on a Shoestring. Then I read the last forum on Sunday while preparing for my post. On it there was a request not to share information unless I had permission from the teacher. I don’t have permission and don’t know how to get it short of going on their book’s face book page and then there wouldn’t be a promise he’d get back to me in time to write a blog post for today.(gasp!) So sorry readers, I really am. He was thinking outside the box and I think you would have liked the info but I can’t in good faith share it.

I started blogging because when the publisher showed interest in my book,  I was asked to do a blog tour and I felt I needed a blog to do that. Now I know better. Now I know that when I go on ‘tour’ I will be a quest on someone else’s blog and will be providing new content each time. My publisher, eTreasures publishing is in the process of setting up a blog tour for November. I’ll be sure and let you know where I’ll be visiting once I know the links. I hope the tour will create a buzz for my book “Annie’s Special Day,” so people will put in a pre-order on Amazon or at my publisher’s web site www.eTreasurespublishing.com . Also theoretically one could buy it on their e-reader whether it be a Tablet, Kindle or Nook.

In the process of getting my book published and sharing whatever I learned with you whether it be my blogging journey or my writer’s journey, you have been with me all the way. Now I finally see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. I finally have an illustrator who really knows her business. She is sending me illustrations faster than I can comment on them. She is in touch with the publishers over what she needs to make my book the best possible.

In case I haven’t told you, I’ll give you a brief summary of what ‘Annie’s’ all about. “Annie’s Special Day” is a basic concept book about time and clocks and a little girl’s new adventure every hour. It’s her birthday and she stays up for twenty-four hours celebrating it. I think it’s perfect for ages kindergarten to seven and for any kid learning to tell time on digital or analog clocks. It’s a perfect accompaniment for teachers, parents, grandparents and librarians who want to teach time.

There seems to be some discrepancy in when it will be published. If the illustrator, Claudia Wolf, gets done with the illustrations by early December, then the book might be out by Christmas. Otherwise it won’t be out till early winter 2012. Claudia’s contract says she has till January 18th to finish all the illustrations. And the original contract didn’t have a cover in it. We were thinking one of the illustrations would do. I have all the thumbnails and now don’t think it will. In my talk with her Monday I’ll mention it. She may not mind making an amendment to the original contract for the cover.

I can’t wait till I have the cover so I can show it to you. Then I’ll really feel like the book is a reality. Then I think I can really start marketing. It’s been a year since I started blogging and it was because of ‘Annie’ that I started. And it’s still about ‘Annie’. I can hardly wait till it’s a real book. It will come out in print before the e version comes out because that’s what I asked for a year ago. Now everyone’s got an e-reader or got the app on their pc. I’ll have to ask if it can be done simultaneously. I want all of you who want, to have a copy. Soon I’ll put the buying info on my blog and you can get it. Then I’ll throw confetti.

What started as marketing and promotion gradually changed as I got comments and started to *know* you, my readers. My  book is still important but the people who connect with me have become more important. You have become the real reason I keep on blogging. You are who I think of when I write now. When I push the publish button, it’s you who I think about. Yah you!

Did any of you know the reason I started blogging was because of my children’s book? Did any of you start blogging because of your book or writing? Who of you started because you just felt like you had something to share?

I didn’t know you started your blog for the book. It would be great if it’s out by Christmas!

Thanks, Suzicate! At this point it’s hard to say.
Yes, I did start blogging because of my book but that’s not why I keep it up. It’s all you! I’ve long since learned that for a web presence, blogging is low profile and every author says so. 🙂

  2. Annie’s Special Day sounds like something my granddaughter would love. Very creative idea to include time in the story and how Annie plan all 24 hours of her birthday. Will look forward to reading it when it is published. Can’t wait to see your cover. You must really be excited. Has it been fun and interesting to work with the illustrator to cut unnecessary copy. I know the real editing begins when the illustrations appear. Was the illustrator open to your input?

I started blogging because I’m writing picture books. Not published yet, but wanted to start creating a platform for my genre and myself. I agree with you about the relationships made — priceless. My blog is a little different because it is about books that heal kids, so I don’t have the huge following others do because it’s not chatty. But, I am surprised at how much I enjoy blogging.

Actually my editor made the most cuts. All the repetitive phrases were cut. She said it was to make the book tighter. But it *cut* to my soul.

Have you found it helped your platform? I find the connections I’ve made through blogging are those in which I also follow the commentors’ blogs. It’s a two way street. It is fun and rewarding. I love my blogging friends.

Have you started pitching to any publishers yet?

      • Interesting that your editor made the cuts. I had hoped it would be more collaborative.

My platform is slowly building. I need to connect with more people in the blogging world– I love doing so, but it is so time consuming. Only a few join my blog. Agents/publishers want to see you have a following. Writing for kid’s magazines would help too. I’m a journalist, and nothing I published counts. But, several agents told me that my networking skills, publicity and PR would be viewed positively.

An agent at the Aug. SCBWI conference, liked my manuscript and took me aside and suggested that I send it to a specific publisher. Some of what I write is for children with special needs. I told him I wanted to get an agent first, and he said get published anyway you can. He let me use his name in my query letter, so I submitted my MS about early Sept. If I don’t hear in four months, I know it means it wasn’t accepted.

By the way, I ran a review of “Wanting Mor” by Rukhsana Khan Sunday and am doing an author interview on Oct. 20. She won the Golden Kite award for one of her books at SCBWI.

Thank you for giving me a thumbs up. Would you be willing to leave your link here in the comments? Maybe a few would see it.
I will be sure to read it.

Good luck with your manuscript. It sounds promising. Are the four months a time limit they gave you or just something you heard should be the cut off time for waiting because I’ve heard it may take longer. ETreasures said 21 days on their web site for submissions but I had to follow up with them to actually get the contract signed. I forget how it actually went but it was definitely longer than 21 days. You may have to follow up with an email if you didn’t get a definite date of *hearing* about it.

          • I submitted to a publisher that accepts “unsolicited” MS. It’s a well-known publisher, and submissions were by snail mail. They only contact those they accept. And, they said if you don’t hear anything after four months, your MS wasn’t accepted. It’s a shot and I was grateful for the agent who encouraged me. I really want to have at least 3-4 picture books as polished as possible before I seach for an agent. I have a wonderful professional editor/mentor. My website is: http://www.childrensbooksheal.com. Thank you.

Congratulations on Annie’s Special Day! So exciting that it will be out soon! I’m looking forward to your blog tour – and I’m impressed that your publisher is setting it up for you – none of mine ever have. And congratulations on reaching your first blogiversary! Mine is December 1st – guess I’ll have to think up something fun to do to celebrate it 🙂

Yes, it is nice for my publisher to be setting up a blog tour. It’s with all the eTreasures authors. Most of those are romances and fantasy though. It will give me some exposure but it won’t be with my target audience. I’m their first picture book. Their first children’s book actually.

Yes,do celebrate your blogaversary. I didn’t think of that. 🙂 In fact I didn’t celebrate it at all. Just went to the ENT again. -gross- 🙂

  4. Congratulations on your book. As I recall, when I first stopped here, you were in the beginning stages of the book process. So cool to see you getting closer to your published book. What a fun story too. Can’t wait to read it.

Thank you, Stacey. I’d be honored to have you read it.

Yes, I’ve had the book contract for the manuscript so long it’s hard to remember how necessary illustrations are. Without illustrations there is no book, not a picture book anyway.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Wow, already 1 year! Time flies 🙂

I also started my blog because of the ‘web presence’ needed for my book. Even though I’ve stopped queries on that book, I’m working on other projects and I blog for fun, so there’s no pressure there.

It sounds like the book publishing is going well. (Yay!) Happy blogversary!

I’m so glad for your about your book! You were wise to start blogging ahead of time (pun intended). I started blogging to get myself used to sharing my writing with people because I knew that one day I wanted to publish books, articles, etc. The blog has brought more rewards than I could ever have imagined, and now I keep blogging because I love to blog and meet bloggers!

Blogging has been very satisfying for me also. I just love the new cyber friendships I’ve formed. Everyone I *meet* is a blessing for me.
The writing community is full of people who are ready to help and offer suggestions. I feel so grateful! 🙂

  9. I began blogging for the same reason as you. It was because I needed people to get to know me since I became an author. The only thing that is tough is trying to come up with things to talk about. I have two blogs, one on blog spot and the other on word press. The word press is where I write little articles and thoughts and the blog spot is where I interview authors. To be a blogger is so tough because I have to figure out things to say that are of worth to others.

Blogging has been fun but I can’t imagine having two of them. There is way too much to do with all the social media now. There’s about four places that I frequent and I don’t follow Google+ yet though hear I should and I suspect I will some day. Not just yet, though. I have a hard time keeping up. 🙂

I saw your two blogs and they are good. But like I said, I can’t imagine keeping them up. I only publish twice a week and that’s enough for me. I’m thinking of cutting back, even. I think if you have two blogs it’s good to separate them into categories like you have. I hear blogger is good for traffic because you get accidental readers that find they like you and will stick with you. 🙂
