We have new book from Joni Cole called Another Bad Dog Book, a collection of hilarious personal essays about mid-life crisis. From the first essay of getting a dog to offer unconditional love now that the children leave the nest to the last about the realizing her Chinese zodiac sign is the year of the dog, the book is full of honest declarations that make you want to call Joni Cole up and say, “yes, I can relate.”
Her description of her eight year old’s birthday party while wallowing in depression is priceless. There is real whimsical insight in the essay about her father in a rest home with a plea for help when Joni realizes that she is also growing old.
Half the fun of reading “Another Bad Dog Book” was that the time span it covered was for someone ten years younger than me. The mentions of face book and a father in a rest home were icons I could identify with. But the other side of that is that the book is not time-tested and is dated to the author’s age of being in high school in the late 70’s. And even though face book is popular now it may be long gone in a year or two, like “my journal”.
Again Joni has written a warm and friendly book that make you feel connected and loved. She has succeeded in creating a feeling of community in a society where family is scattered around the country.
Joni is known for her books, Toxic Feedback, Helping Writers Survive and Thrive, and a three-volume series of “This Day” about the diversity of American women. She regularly contributes to The Writer magazine and is a speaker at writer workshops around the country. You can learn more about her on her face book page and join her on twitter at:
